At the funeral of Imam Khomeini, 1989, Tehran
After an extensive heart attack in 1980, Seyid Ruholla Mostafavi Mousavi Khomeini and his family settled in a suburb of Tehran. In early 1989, he underwent surgery on the gastrointestinal tract, which led to a sharp deterioration in health. Imam passed away on June 3, 1989.
June 5, 1989 over 10 million people came to the funeral to say goodbye to their spiritual leader. At one time, Imam Khomeini said that the one whose stretchers would drop at a funeral would go to hell. Khomeini also said that among the signs of a bad demise is the fall of the stretcher of the deceased at the funeral. During the funeral procession, 32 kilometers in length from Tehran to the Beheshte-Zahra cemetery, a distraught crowd broke through the cordon. Next, the fanatics tore the shroud into commemorative patches and dropped the body of their leader. After that, the security forces dispersed the crowd with water cannons, took the body away by helicopter, and the ceremony was repeated five hours later.
Imam’s funeral is still considered the most widespread funeral in history.During the crush, 10 people died and more than 400 suffered with varying degrees of severity, which can be considered such figures as “successful”, given the total number of people.
