The picture shows the B-17 bomber from the 100th bomber squadron of the USAAF after the unsuccessful departure for the bombing of Frankfurt. The destruction of part of the fuselage and tail - the result of hitting an anti-aircraft projectile over Ostend, Belgium, during a raid on Frankfurt on January 24, 1944. Shot shot by Roy Uric, but he survived, managed to open the parachute and was captured.
Pilot Frank Walesch and co-pilot John Booth managed to bring the damaged B-17 back to England and landed him safely at Eastchurch airfield.

To increase the effectiveness of the fight against such heavy bombers of the Allies, which have a high survivability, at the end of 1943, the Lufwaffe adopted a MK 108 gun with a caliber of 30 mm. This gun used high-explosive shells with a thin-walled "Minengeschoß" shell, allowing to increase the volume of explosives without increasing the caliber. This type of projectiles in the caliber of 20 mm has well established itself as the BC of the MG 151/20 air cannons, especially when a wooden or a mixed construction gets into the elements of the airframe or tail unit.

For the destruction of a bomber of a similar class, an average of 4 hits from the MK 108 were enough, while the MG 151/20 20 mm cannon required about 30 hits with projectiles of the same type.

But by that time, experts from the Luftwaffe knocked out on the Western and Eastern front were replaced by pilots from aviation schools with a minimum amount of air, and Germany’s air defense could not provide the goals and objectives declared to have lost contact with reality by the morphinist Goering.
