Picking rules for tomato seedlings

The optimal period for transplantation

Picking seedlingsIn simple words, picking is the transplanting of seedlings that have reached a certain size in a container, the volume of which is much larger than the previous ones. The primary goal of the procedure is the culling of weak shoots. But also a picking of tomatoes is necessary for the roots to develop properly and fully, and the seedlings do not stretch out.

It is necessary to dive in tomato seedlings depending on which variety you decided to grow and when the seedlings were planted.

In general, tall varieties of vegetables should be replanted 2 times, and undersized and medium-sized bushes - once.

The first pickling of seedlings of tomatoes should be made after 10-14 days from the day when the seeds of the crop were planted in the ground. At this point on the stems will be a pair of these leaves. Capacity needs to be chosen deeper, than initial volume.ShootsThe second procedure for transplanting seedlings sprouts can be done in 20-22 days.Preliminary it is worth preparing the container which volume will be more than 1,5-2 times in comparison with previous. In order for the seedlings to start and develop fully after the procedure, it is necessary to water the plants abundantly within 24 hours.

Some summer residents may wonder why it is worth picking up tomato seedlings during these periods. The answer is based on the peculiarities of the development of seedlings. So, for example, if a plant is transplanted before a specified period, then the root system that has not yet become stronger can be injured. If you transplant later, the roots can also be damaged, especially if the planting was grouped, and vegetable seedlings were placed very thickly.

Transplant procedure step by step

PickingAs previously mentioned, tomato picks can be done using one of several existing methods. Today we describe the two most common:

  • The "traditional" method of picking, which is used by the majority of gardeners;
  • more modern method applied to the plants planted in separate capacities.

"Traditional" method of transplanting

Ready for transplanting seedlingsThis method of picking tomatoes is used when the seedlings were planted in one container.During group planting, it is correct to replant seedlings into large containers with the appearance of the first pair of leaves. As mentioned above, this occurs approximately 10-14 days after the sowing date.

For the procedure will need to pre-prepare:

  • containers with a volume of 0.7-100 ml and a height of 12-15 cm;
  • priming.

First you need to prepare the container for growing seedlings in it.

To ensure good aeration and drainage of excess water after irrigation, holes should be made in tanks. Then you can fill them with soil.
To grow tomatoes fit the usual mixture, which goes on sale with the mark "For seedlings." After this, the picking of the tomatoes themselves can be carried out.

SeedlingIt is worth noting that transplanting tomato sprouts will turn out with minimal damage to the roots, if previously (within 1-2 days) the soil is well soaked. Thus, when you start the procedure, the plants will be freely removed from the soil.

Now it is worth taking each prepared container with a primer and a pencil to make a depression to the very bottom. Then pour water at room temperature into the hole. It will take about 100-200 ml depending on the size of the container.While the water has not yet been absorbed into the soil, we place the seedling and compact the soil around it. To lower the sprout in the hole should be up to the cotyledon leaves.

It is not recommended to immediately moisten the soil with a pickled stem. In order for the sprout to settle down well, it will be enough for the liquid that you poured into the recess. The first watering after transplanting seedlings should be made after 4-7 days. Then you can moisten the soil with tomato seedlings 1 time in 5-6 days depending on growing conditions.

Transplanting sprouts germinating in separate containers

Saplings in cupsIn this method, tomato seedlings are transplanted, the seeds of which were originally planted in separate containers. As a rule, plastic disposable cups are used for this purpose. A pick of tomatoes should be carried out, as in the previous method, when the shoots reach the age of 10-14 days. By this time, each stem should already have a pair of full-fledged leaves.

To dive tomato seedlings, you must prepare:

  • fresh ground;
  • more bulk capacity.

Transplant seedlings by way of transshipment. To do this, take a new container and make holes in each of the water.Then fresh soil should be filled in approximately 1/3 capacity. After that, you need to remove the seedlings, trying not to damage the root system. To do this, pre-moistened soil “pasca” is removed from the cup and put in a new dish. The remaining soil is filled with the space between the walls of the container and the earthy clod with tomato roots.

This picking method is more laborious. However, the result justifies the expectations and the seedlings turn out strong and have a stocky appearance.
This ensures the integrity of the roots of the stems, which, in turn, allows you to increase yields.

Tips for novice gardeners

SproutThere are cases when the picking of tomatoes, carried out correctly and in a timely manner, stops the growth of stems.

Firstly, the growth of seedlings may stop if they were picked directly into the cold ground. To stimulate the further development of seedlings, you need to impose bottles with seedlings on bottles, filling them with hot water.

Similar situations also occur when the soil is sour. This can be prevented by sprinkling the soil on top with a small layer of ash and a good surface.
