Saints, reverend, martyrs - as they call various saints

It is not difficult to notice that different saints in the church are otherwise called: there are apostles, martyrs, reverend, pious, confessors, passion-bearers ... How to distinguish them? And is it necessary, if they have already been honored by the Kingdom of Heaven?

All these names indicate the way in which these people came to God, how the talents presented to them were used. The Orthodox Church honors the saints in various orders: prophets, apostles, equal apostles, saints, saints, martyrs, great martyrs, holy martyrs, confessors, pious, disgraceful, Christ for the holy fools and passion-bearers.

ABOUTthe prophetswe also know from the Old Testament. These are the devotees who have received a special gift from God - to know the Will of the Creator about the people and destinies of the world. The Lord opened the future to them.

For example, from the Old Testament we know about the so-called four great prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, and Ezekiel.Especially revered and in our time are the holy Elijah and John the Baptist. The church also knows the names of the wives whom God has bestowed with such a gift (righteous Anna also belongs to them).

Apostles- followers of Christ and in fact the first preachers of Christianity. In ancient Greek, this word is translated as ambassadors, that is, messengers of Jesus. The church especially honors the memory of 12 apostles, of which Peter and Paul are considered the first among them.

Apostles Peter and Paul

But this is not a complete list. In fact, there were much more disciples and followers of Christ, therefore they call the number 70 or even 72. The names of most of them are not present in the Gospel, therefore the complete list was compiled already in the 4th-5th centuries on the basis of Holy Tradition.

Those saints who lived several centuries after the first sermons of Christianity, but also worked to spread the teachings of the Church, are calledEqual to the Apostles. For example, Konstantin and Helena Equal to the Apostles, Vladimir and Olga, Equal to the Apostles.

PrelatesIt is accepted to call the representatives of the third degree of priesthood - bishops, archbishops, metropolitans and patriarchs, who pleased God with their service to the flock. There are a lot of them in the Orthodox Church, but the most revered ones are Nikolay Mirlikiysky, Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom (they are also called ecumenical teachers, they set forth the Orthodox teaching on the Most Holy Trinity).

The Rev.called those who served God in the monastic ranks. Their most important work is fasting and prayer, taming one’s own will, humility, chastity.

There are a lot of saints who shine in this face, because it is difficult to find a monastery that has its own history, but has no saints. Another question is that it must take time for the monks to be canonized. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is known for the Rev. Pechersk Fathers. Famous and especially glorified are Seraphim of Sarov and Sergius of Radonezh.

The greatest number of saints came to the kingdom of heaven asthe martyrs. They for their faith suffered terrible suffering and death. Especially many such confessors were in times of persecution of Christians.

Those who have suffered particularly severe torment are calledgreat martyrs. For example, the healer Panteleimon, Barbara and Catherine. Also havemartyrs(they died in sacred dignity) andmartyr(suffered while being a monastic tonsure).

Confessorsare those who openly confessed themselves as Christians (confessed), but did not die a martyr's death. Many confessors appear during the persecutions for the faith.

Piousthe saints of Christ are called, who in the world were monarchs (for example, princes or kings) and with their righteous life pleased God. For many people they associate with the famous in the Russian Church Alexander Nevsky, Andrey Bogolyubsky, Dmitry Donsky and others. In fact, this face of the saints originated in the Church of Constantinople (glorified the Byzantine emperors and their wives).

Unmercenarythey had a special gift from the Almighty - they could heal from bodily and spiritual diseases, but did not take money for their help (for example, Cosma and Damian).

Cosma and Damian

Christ for the holy fools- perhaps one of the most interesting and difficult ways to God. These people deliberately wore the mask of insanity, although they had nothing in common with clouding of reason. They lived on the street, led a very modest and unpretentious life: they endured a hot sun and a burning frost, ate a small part from alms, dressed in rags, that is, they did not care at all about themselves. For this, God gave them a special gift - to see other people's spiritual illnesses.

Therefore, the holy fools engaged in exposure, even could directly tell the king if they saw that he was bogged down in vices. In addition, they hid their virtues, and for disclosing the iniquities of others, they often suffered insults or even beatings (although, for example, in Russia they were considered “God's people”, therefore it was considered a great sin to beat the fool, but human malice violated this unwritten rule). A vivid example of such a path to salvation is Ksenia of Petersburg.

Sometimes the holy fools of Christ are also called blessed (for example, St. Basil), but this word has different shades of meanings.

By the martyrsThey call those people who did not die of their own death, but, being Christians, suffered not for their faith, but for a righteous way of life, or gave their own lives for the welfare of others. Princes Boris and Gleb were considered to be the first martyrs in Russia. Representatives of the family of the last emperor of Russia, Nicholas II, who led a truly Christian life, but were killed as representatives of the monarchy, are canonized in this face of saints.

Royal Passion-Bearers

We also know the names of some saints who are calledrighteous. Usually it is the laity (as well as representatives of the white clergy) who led a righteous life, fulfilled the commandments. These include the forefathers (including the Old Testament patriarchs) and the godfathers (first of all, the parents of the Virgin Mary — Joachim and Anna), and the righteous John of Kronstadt, Simeon of Verkhotursk and others.

An example of all these saints indicates that the paths to God can be very different, but there is one fundamental principle: the presence of boundless faith and reinforcement with good deeds, following the Gospel commandments.
