Should I Love Yourself - Orthodox Look

Orthodoxy talks a lot about altruism, love for God and people, and the information society puts “I” in the first place. It turns out, it is egoism? But how to understand the commandment:?

About vanity and information corruption

“Faithful” advisors - glossy magazines - shout from each page: “Love yourself!”, “Until you love yourself, don't even expect a positive response from others.” What do they teach people?

Women are told what beauty they are and what they don’t need to hide. Dress the skirt shorter, the blouse with the cut is deeper, put on the lips with lipstick more brightly. What are you lovely! Love yourself so!

Selfishness and EgoismAre you eloquent, sing beautifully or sew dresses for yourself? Be proud of it.

Similar, but less pronounced intentions instill in men. You are beautiful, slim, strong, smart - you have to adore this.

Of course, such thoughts act as the seeds of egoism. Therefore, Christianity denies such feelings.

Accept yourself and thank the Almighty

God is love.Everything created by Him is wonderful in itself, and man was the pinnacle of all creation. He is the image and likeness of God. All that we have is thanks to the Creator. We have nothing of “our own” except sins. But the Lord loves us just like that, not for something.

If Christianity denied self-love, then we would not have a commandment: ". From this it follows that one must begin with oneself. What does it mean?

Christian self-love has nothing to do with self-love.

To love yourself in Christianity is to accept yourself as God created, and to thank the Most High for all the blessings and talents he has rewarded. Arguments can be many.

I love myself because:

  • I am the Creation of God, and all that he created is beautiful.
  • I am the image and likeness of God. Think about it: we were created not just like that “hands, legs, cucumber - it turned out to be a little man”. Man is like God. Feel the depth in this phrase?
  • I have many talents and virtues. They were awarded by the Lord.

And as a result of this - I am grateful (-n) to the Almighty that he created me so (-th). I have a beautiful appearance, a pleasant voice, the ability to draw or heal people. It is not just mine, but given from above. From God. And I am grateful for that.

Properly love yourself over all people. Especially important is to convince the teenagers. The fact is that it is at this age that children do not like their appearance, it seems to them that they are just “ugly and untalented”, so nobody needs them.

What naivety! God loves us all. Why not take an example from Him?

love peopleI love other people because I see the imprint of God in them. Every person is good according to the intention of the Creator. In this sense, man is perfect. But there are some "but." They are all connected with sin.

Hate sins

Each person is "wonderfully arranged." But he is constantly spoiled by vices.

Here you ask: for what a drug addict or a murderer to love yourself? Yes, he is spoiled. It is hard for him to get out of this abyss. He may hate passion in himself a hundred and a thousand times, but in him there is the image of God. That is what you need to love.

In addition, we are a likeness of the Creator. What does it mean? We must strive to be like the Lord with our actions, with our lives.

Such an understanding of human nature imposes additional responsibility. After all, if you are like God, do you have the right to ruin your life - to drink, rob, kill? It is said to be "too low."

But if you fell into a hole, you must try to get out of it. If you are mired in the hardest passions, try to clear. But not by themselves, but with earnest prayer to God.

path of repentanceThe Lord will come to the rescue.

Therefore, you can simultaneously respect yourself as a creation of God and hate for sins. And this is not schizophrenia. The first should cause a feeling of gratitude, and the second - the desire to change.

All this will allow to fulfill the commandment:

Take it to yourself, tell your friends!

How to avoid unhappy love?
Love is the main (innate) vocation of each of us. We are all created in the image and likeness of God, who himself is Love. Therefore, a person is happy only to the extent that he realizes his high feelings with the help of the Heavenly Father.
Christian Love, or From Help to Harm - One Step
The fact that you need to help your neighbor, they know all the Orthodox. The greatest example of Christian love and mercy is Jesus himself. A good example of this is the Gospel story of the Good Samaritan. But is our help always helpful?
In difficult moments, the Lord carries a man in his arms - a parable
God loves man so much that he is always ready to give a helping hand and forgive even a robber on the cross. True, a person does not always understand this and begins to complain: the Lord has left me ... But He is always there. The parable tells this very thinly.
Love Calling Disease
Sick people cause us compassion and mercy. For example, you see a blind person. What should you think about? Except mercy for this man. It is necessary to think: “If, Lord, you have given me a sight, unlike this unfortunate one, it means that I must ward off this sight not only from sinful things, but also from vain, superfluous things.”
