The man was completely transplanted face after the accident.
Doctors from Poland saved the life of a 33-year-old dying patient by performing the first surgery for a facial tissue transplant.
A group of surgeons under the leadership of Professor Adam Maciejewski from Poland carried out a full face transplant to a 33-year-old man who received a work injury.
In mid-April 2013, an employee of the workshop named Grzegorz became a participant in a terrible event: the machine used for cutting stones disfigured it during construction work. As a result of the emergency, a resident of Poland was left almost without a face.
Doctors said that because of the injuries the patient was on the verge of life and death. The only thing that could save him was an emergency face transplant, but such a surgical procedure had never been done in such a short time.
“We were forced to look for a donor urgently, we had no other way out,” says doctor Adam Macieevsky.- Fortunately, the donor was found very quickly. The family of the deceased 30-year-old man agreed to give us his facial tissue. We reconstructed the entire face of the victim, from the lower part of the eyelids to the jaw and the sky. Surgical intervention lasted more than 27 hours. This operation was the fastest in the world. Polish journalists emphasize that doctors not only transplanted soft tissues to the patient, but also reconstructed the upper and middle facial skeleton sections. The heart and liver were also transplanted to him from two donors.
“This is the first face transplant in Poland,” said a spokeswoman for the Oncology Center at the Institute of Medicine in Gliwice. - This is a historical moment not only for the doctors of our country, but for the whole world, as this operation was the first in the world to be carried out urgently.
