Viktor Tsoi in Japan
Amuse Corporation invited Viktor Tsoi to Tokyo, where, back in early 1990, a CD with the original recording of the Blood Group album was released.
To get acquainted with all the musicians of “KINO”, Japanese musical impresarios came to Leningrad and presented a set of recording equipment as a gift (on the advice of Rashid Nugmanov). According to Natalia Razlogovoy, the “cinema people” met with the Japanese who arrived somewhere in neutral territory, and everything was warm and friendly enough ...
The plans of the company "Amuse Corporation" was to offer Tsoy international tour "KINO" (including in Korea). Instead of Rashid, who was at that time in Seattle, where he was involved in the project with Gibson, Joanna Stingray went to Japan with Victor.
At the airport in Tokyo, Tsoi and Joanna were met by the well-known Japanese musical impresario Yoki-chi Osato (Kaicho), who arranged for them at a hotel and started organizing the program of the trip.
Victor liked the softness and politeness of the Japanese, their natural restraint and shyness. As Joanna Stingray noted, Victor undoubtedly felt some inner connection with them and he was very well and calmly surrounded by them.
In the process of various excursions and meetings with music producers, negotiations on further cooperation were unobtrusively proceeding.
The Japanese, expressing their favor and respect to the leader of the “KINO”, hoped for a positive outcome of the negotiations and made global plans for the “KINO” tour in Japan, and also considered the possibility of a world tour of the group together with Japanese rock musicians. Victor was watching, drawing conclusions. At that time, western or any other career on the terms of a “receiving party” was considered a very unforgivable compromise.
Everyone understood that it was almost impossible to enter the monastery of professional show business with its charter. It was enough to take an example from Grebenshchikov, who was flattered by the prospect of world fame and followed the lead of the producers who had failed Boris. After that, Grebenshchikov lost authority not only in the get-together, but also among his fans. “It would be better if he died” - such conversations went after the failure of Grebenshchikov among the fans of “Aquarium”. And Choi was well aware of what to expect in case of an error and failure.
According to the memories of loved ones, Choi did not know the word "compromise" at all.He was a very solid person, and no bright prospects could force him to retreat even a step from what he considered correct. With any professional contacts, Victor set his own terms or refused to cooperate.
So it was in France, so it would be in Japan. Choi could not "seduce" with anything. And the Japanese immediately felt it, and therefore put forward only serious proposals, very carefully and thinking through each step.
As Choi himself recalled, all three days in Japan were devoted to all sorts of entertainment and visits to fashionable and cultural places.
According to Joanna Stingray, they enjoyed themselves as children and in the full sense of the word enjoyed life. Everyone liked Victor very much, especially the girls, because he looked Oriental, but he was above all that won them over. Japanese girls, as you know, are very shy, so they just sneak at him and giggle.
Joanna Stingray:“Japanese girls fell in love with Victor. Every time they saw him, they were embarrassed, laughed and ran away from him, considering Victor to be very beautiful, very tall and very majestic. "
With the help of Jokichi Osato Tsoi and Johanna, they attended the concert of the popular in Japan “Southern All Stars” group, which made a big impression on them. This stage show could only be compared with the performances of Pink Floyd. Choi noted the melodiousness of Japanese songs and defined the music of “Southern All Stars” as “a modern version of Frank Sinatra in the Japanese interpretation,” however, he said with irony:“When the Japanese are trying to play some kind of rock, it’s certainly funny.”
The leader of the “Southern Academy of Stars” Keisuke Kuwate became very friendly with Tsoi and, as a sign of friendship, presented him with a recording of one of his albums a magnificent black guitar “Yamaha”.
