What to do when the first symptoms of retinal detachment

What to do at the first symptoms of retinal detachment?

The essence of the problem

Description of the disease

Retinal disinsertionIn the structure of a healthy eye, the surfaces of the retina and choroid contact very tightly and are not separated from each other even with very strong loads on the human body. However, there are numerous reasons for which delamination can occur, characterized by significant visual impairment, as well as the development of many dangerous diseases.

The most common are various diseases of the eye that relate to the retina, choroid or vitreous body. Within this cause, there are also several factors that can impair health.

Almost half of the cases when there is retinal detachment are caused by rupture of the surface caused by tumors that strongly compress the inner surface of the organ of vision.

In addition, the modification of the vitreous body, located in the immediate vicinity of the retina, causes the so-calledtraction. This phenomenon consists in the formation of dense filaments inside the aforementioned organ attached to the fundus of the eye - at the slightest movement they are strongly tensioned, which is a significant enough prerequisite for detachment.

Retinal detachmentAfter some time, even the healthy surface of the retina does not stand up and comes off the membrane, which is the moment of onset of the disease. If a person’s vision was impaired by various diseases, exhaustion, lack of vitamins, or other factors, the detachment begins to progress with lightning speed, causing serious problems after a few weeks.

Main reasons

We should not forget about the existence of such a reason as congenital dystrophy of the retina - in most cases it does not arise independently, but acts as a companion of such illnesses as diabetes, cerebral palsy, rickets and many others. People who have been diagnosed with dystrophy should regularly check their eyesight throughout their life, and, having noticed the slightest signs of deterioration, should immediately begin treatment.

In addition, the symptoms of the problem can occur in diabetic retinopathy - delamination is not uncommon in this case.

Glued damaged eyeFinally, symptoms of the disease also appear after serious damage to the eye, such as a blow, burn, or exposure to aggressive chemicals. Retinal detachment becomes a consequence of the deformation of the main elements of the organ of vision - choroid, vitreous, and others.

In case of mechanical damage to the eye, the vision can be partially restored after a short time, which means the healing of microtraumas. However, such a remission does not last long - usually within a month the state of human health begins to rapidly deteriorate.

Diagnostics

The symptoms of the disease have several characteristic signs that are difficult to confuse with other diseases of the eye. However, they appear already at that stage when retinal detachment has gone far enough.

At first, a person begins to notice that his eyesight is deteriorating — and this is manifested not in a decrease in his acuity, but in the appearance of a muddy veil in front of his eyes. The symptoms of the disease at this stage are similar to cataracts, however, detachment progresses much faster if the treatment is not started promptly.In addition, the veil appears in a certain part of the eye and only then begins to expand, gradually taking up an increasing part of the visual field.

It is very important to remember exactly which space was subjected to the effect of detachment, in order to point the doctor at it during the examination.

Some patients say that the symptoms manifest in them in the form of frequent flashes before their eyes, resulting in significant fatigue. Retinal detachment can lead to the appearance of images of sparks and lightning strokes, which do not exist in reality - while the person does not feel any pain or various unpleasant sensations. If at this stage you do not begin treatment, then the detachment will gradually reach the center of the eye, which will manifest itself in a sharp deterioration in the health of the organs of vision.

Poor vision in a person with retinal detachmentAt the last stage of retinal detachment, nerve cells located inside the orbit begin to die, the rods and cones collapse. After some time, the person begins to notice that certain areas disappear from the field of view, which are replaced by blurred gray spots or fuzzy areas. To see a certain object, you have to change the angle, directing the remaining intact portion of the retina to it.

As a rule, treatment in such a case can only stop the further progress of the disease, but if it is not started, retinal detachment can cause the following symptoms:

  • cataract;
  • chronic inflammation, the result of which may be the removal of the eye;
  • total incurable blindness.

Fight disease

It is worth remembering that the drug treatment, which is sometimes offered on the Internet, is a real deception. Even the strongest supportive drugs can stop retinal detachment, slowing the rate of disease development, but not eliminate its causes. The only possible treatment is surgery, associated with a simple operation, in 99% of which does not impair a person’s vision.

Laser retinal correctionTo completely prevent detachment, use a cryogenic or laser effect on the damaged area of the retina. There is quite a serious inflammation, during which regeneration processes are activated. After a short period of time, scar formation occurs, which means the beginning of the restoration of the normal state of the eye. Of course, during the year after surgery, it is advisable to undergo regular examinations to minimize the risk of relapse.

If vision deteriorates as a result of vitreous body modification, the doctor may prescribe an operation to replace it. Depending on medical indications, saline, silicone mass, or a special gas can be injected inside. In addition, in complex operations, a seal is often applied in the form of a silicone cord, compressing the retina with the choroid.
